“Mom I’m hungry and there’s no food in the house.” Raise your hand if you’ve heard this from you boys more than once. The sad thing is that you just went to the grocery store yesterday.
There is no doubt that you spend a lot of money on your boys. You may need a little help in this department because raising boys is expensive. Here are some tips for saving money when grocery shopping for boys.
Know how much you need to buy
Anyone with boys knows that it takes a lot of product to feed your boys. Before you even venture out on your grocery shopping trip, know how much you need to buy. This will keep you from overspending and under-delivering. Plus, if you have to make another trip to the grocery store, you’ll just be wasting more time and money.
Limit the Snack Purchases
As much as your boys love junk food, you can’t spend all your money on it. Split your budget between healthy food and their favorite snacks. I try to do 90% healthy food and 10% snacks. It’s so easy for boys to eat all the snacks and then they’ll complain there is nothing left. Trust me when I say you’ll save money by not buying all junk food for your boys! Not to mention you will figure out are they eating from boredom or because they are hungry. I noticed when I cut down on snacks and they had to make a sandwich or something that took a few minutes they ate less because it was more work. Some of their always hungry was boredom. Once it wasn’t a quick fix suddenly they were not starving every 2 minutes. If they get hungry enough, they will eat the healthy stuff.
Meatless Meals Once or Twice a Week
Raise your hand if your boys LOVE eating meat. Well, it’s no secret that meat can be expensive, which is why this is the perfect time to try meatless meals. It’s okay to not have meat at every meal and this will for sure reflect in your grocery bill.
Name Brand? What’s That???
Do you know how much money you spend buying the name brand? Your boys won’t know the difference between name brand and off brand. You can do what I did save one of those name brand boxes and put your off brand items in it. 3 yrs later and my boys still don’t know their cereal isn’t name brand Frosted Flakes. And if they do complain, you can explain that your grocery budget only goes to far.Your boys can be pretty good at understanding, it’s just a matter of explaining.
Filling whole grains
There is just something about boys. They eat one minute and the next minute they’re hungry again. By buying more whole grains, you’re keeping them fuller longer. Oatmeal works wonders in my house! It keeps my boys full, but they also love it. There are lots of whole grains out there that can keep those boy bellies full. Whole grains like brown rice, whole wheat bread, millet, oatmeal, and even popcorn!
Shop Frugal
The way that saves my wallet is to shop frugal. If there is a sale I’m on it. Coupons are your friend. I like to stock up so when a sale hits and I have a coupon mega savings. By shopping sales and using coupon I save hundreds. For example I spent 48$ the other day but saved 211$ by using coupons and shopping the sales.
