Imaginative Journaling Activities To Do With Kids

journaling for kids

A Day in the Life of Mom is proud to host Mari L Mcarthy as she writes about Imaginative journaling activities to do with kids.

Kids love to express themselves creatively, and they aren’t shy or self-conscious about it the way we adults can be. They want to ask questions, tell stories, draw pictures and plan adventures – and journaling is a wonderful outlet for their natural curiosity and imagination.

Even young children can enjoy simple journaling activities. Try these journaling ideas with your kids.

The Anything Book

Let your children pick out their own journals. They don’t have to be fancy or expensive – a simple notebook or sketchpad is perfect – but giving kids the power to choose a cover that’s red or blue or covered in dinosaurs makes it more special.

Set out stickers, stamps, crayons, markers and colored pencils, and let the journaling begin. Explain that they can use their journals to make up stories, talk about their favorite things, imagine crazy ideas, anything they like. Encourage them to write and draw whatever is on their mind (and you can sit with them and do your own journaling at the same time).

Nature Journaling

Go on a walk around the neighborhood or to the park, and pay attention to the natural world around you. Ask questions like, “What animals and plants do you see?” and “What smells and sounds and colors do you notice?” Collect interesting tidbits along the way, such as leaves, flowers or rocks.

When you get back home, do a nature journaling activity. Describe what you observed with your five senses. Draw pictures of the living creatures you encountered or trace the object you brought home with you.

Shared Stories

Collaborate with your kids to write a short story. Ask them for the first line, and write it down. Then pass the plot on to the next person, who comes up with another sentence, and so on:

There once was a giant dragon who could fly super fast and far…

And the dragon had a friend, a little girl named Amelia, who wanted to be a space explorer…

So the two of them decided to take a trip to the moon…

Let the stories go in all sorts of wild and silly directions. Have fun with them!

Get your children in the habit of putting their ideas onto paper, and start building a foundation for a lifelong love of writing and creating.
